Surprise after surprise – that seemed to be the theme of Beth & Bruce’s glorious wedding day at Upper Shirley Vineyards. Most of the surprises were inspired by music, but the first surprise…the weather! All week had been calling for rain, but the skies held out on April 21st. Not a drop in sight!

Suprise #2 – Instead of a typical wedding party, Beth and Bruce chose to involve their entire family – parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, the list goes on. Every family member processed to an acoustic version of We Are Family by Sister Sledge, dancing all the way down the aisle. It was the perfect group for such a lively processional!

Suprise #3 – From the start of the planning process, Beth and Bruce knew they wanted a circular ceremony. It was important to them to stand in the middle of that circle surrounded by their closest family and friends. While it took us quite a while to land on the wedding venue, Upper Shirley ended up being the perfect setting for this vision. Sitting throughout the circle, amongst friends and family, were a few musicians. As if it were right out of the wedding scene in Love Actually, the musicians popped up in their seats as the ceremony ended while playing to the tune of All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. I could have sworn I saw Kiera Knightly at one point!

Surprise #4 – This was Beth’s surprise for her groom. It may have been a little more work on our end, but we were more than happy to accommodate! About a month prior to the wedding day, Beth came by the office with a grand idea – she wanted to surprise Bruce with a rendition of Don’t Stop by Fleetwood Mac. This request seemed easy enough. Well, she wanted the song played by a live marching band. It was such a unique idea, and what better way to get the local community involved? Varina High School’s marching band made Beth’s dream a reality! During cocktail hour, unbeknownst to Bruce and all of the wedding guests, the band pulled up in a classic, yellow school bus. What a wonderful group of faculty and students. Not only did they walk around the venue playing the requested song, but continued on for a few more numbers (some involving pretty epic dance moves).

Surprise #5 – Beth’s sister reached out to our team and the wedding band, Mr. Potato Head, a few weeks prior to the wedding day. A number of family members were hoping to perform Squeeze Box by The Who with the band. This song has special meaning to Beth’s family, and there was no way Mr. Potato Head wasn’t going to oblige. Toward the end of the reception, we gathered Beth and Bruce, their family members, and the remaining guests inside the ballroom. This really is one talented family! More than 10 members contributed to the number. It sure was a moment to remember.

We’ve seen some very unique and personalized weddings over the years, but Beth & Bruce’s wedding day seemed to overflow with love, memory, and personalized touches. It exuded their personalities – pink, hearts, giraffes, photographs, feather boas, Ellie (the cutest pooch there every was)…details everywhere!
